My recent trip to Japan was filled with many new encounters. Of special interest to millinery students was the visit to the millinery suppliers where I purchased a roll of paper espaterie. This fascinating material is the perfect foundation for a wide range of materials. Being light and springy it brings life and comfor to millinery designs. It is a pleasure to use once the basic skills are learned. Attending a workshop with Mr Hirano in Kyoto I learned a little of his method with paper espaterie, a fascinating insight into traditional techniques.
