Maintaining your Akubra after it is repaired.

Congratulations on extending the life of your hat with repairs from Serena Lindeman Millinery. Here is some advice about how to care for your hat and maintain the appearance for as long as possible

  1. Always handle your hat with two hands. Don’t hold it by the pinch at the front, this will avoid a hole forming there with time and this can never be invisibly repaired. If you use two hands and treat it as if it is made of egg shells it will last a lot longer.
  2. Every couple of times you wear your hat brush it with a soft clothes brush to remove dust building up over time.
  3. Store your hat in a cool dry place- Avoid hanging it on a hook. They can alter the shape over time.
  4. Avoid leaving the hat in the direct sunshine- it will fade the felt and dry out the leather components.
  5. Avoid wearing in the rain, your hat is more likely to lose its shape if allowed to get wet. If it DOES get wet allow to dry away from heat sources.
  6. From time to time wipe the sweatband inside your hat with a damp cloth, this will help remove salt from your sweat from the leather. The salt makes the leather brittle. You can occasionally use leather cream or hand cream on the leather to keep it supple.
  7. If you have decided to steam your brim you need to be SUPER careful, avoid the steam getting onto the leather as it will “cook” it.
